Purity – a New Future with a Sewing Machine

Purity is a single mother of five children. She ran a small tea shop until she became seriously ill and was unable to work for three months. Without an income, she lost her shop and was left with nothing to support her children.

We initially supported her with food. When she told us that she could sew, we bought her a treadle sewing machine in Nairobi, which she can operate without electricity.

A New Beginning

With the sewing machine, Purity was able to return to her work and earn her own income. Today, she sews clothes and various types of bags. This allows her to contribute to her family’s living expenses while putting her skills to use again.

The support does not end with the sewing machine. We also support her eldest son with his university fees, enabling him to continue his education.

Her Work Creates New Opportunities

Today, Purity makes, among other things, the bags that are sold in Switzerland. Each bag is sewn by her by hand, making every one a personal piece of her work.

When you buy a bag, you support Purity’s work and income. At the same time, the proceeds from the bag sales go towards the work of Bawa Ndege, supporting people with disabilities in Kenya.

In this way, a sewing machine becomes more than just a means of earning an income: it creates new opportunities – for Purity, for her family, and through the bag project, for other people in Kenya as well.
